Range safety Rules

Safety is the highest priority at the Wapiti Shooters Club. Every member and guest is responsible for maintaining a safe, respectful, and controlled environment. The rules on this page apply at all times, without exception, and are enforced by Range Safety Officers and club leadership.

General Range Rules

These rules apply to all members, guests, and visitors.
  • Eye and ear protection are mandatory for everyone on or near the firing line.
  • Firearms must remain unloaded until you are on the firing line and authorized to shoot.
  • Use chamber flags when firearms are not in active use, where required.
  • Only approved targets may be used. Check with clubhouse for further details.
  • Alcohol, cannabis, and impairing substances are strictly prohibited before or during shooting.
  • Respect all posted signage and range‑specific instructions.
  • Clean up your area after shooting, including brass, targets, and garbage.

Core Firearm Safety Principles

These principles apply everywhere on club property, not just on the firing line.
  • Always treat every firearm as if it is loaded — even when you believe it is not.
  • Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction — never at people or unintended targets.
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot — maintain trigger discipline at all times.
  • Be sure of your target and what is beyond it — ensure a safe backstop and clear line of fire.
These four rules form the foundation of all safe shooting practices.

Range Safety Officer Authority

Range Safety Officers (RSOs) are responsible for maintaining safety and order. Their instructions must be followed immediately.
  • RSOs may stop shooting at any time if unsafe conditions are observed.
  • Failure to follow RSO instructions may result in removal from the range.
  • RSOs have final authority on firing line operations, cease fires, and shooter conduct.
  • Report any unsafe behavior to an RSO or club executive immediately.

Firing Line Procedures

These rules ensure safe operation during active shooting.
  • Only handle firearms on the firing line unless otherwise directed.
  • Do not handle firearms during a cease fire — step back from the bench.
  • Firearms must be pointed downrange at all times while on the line.
  • Keep actions open when not actively shooting.
  • Load only when instructed or when the firing line is declared hot.
  • Maintain awareness of shooters to your left and right.

Cease Fire Procedures

A cease fire may be called by anyone who observes an unsafe condition.
  • Immediately stop shooting and remove your finger from the trigger.
  • Unload your firearm and open the action.
  • Step back from the firing line and do not touch firearms.
  • Wait for RSO confirmation before going downrange.
  • Do not return to the line until the RSO declares the range hot.

Safe Handling & Transport

Proper handling extends beyond the firing line.
  • Firearms must be cased or holstered when moving between areas.
  • Actions must remain open when transporting uncased firearms.
  • Muzzles must always point in a safe direction during movement.
  • Use appropriate storage when firearms are not in use.

Ammunition & Equipment Rules

  • Use only safe, functional ammunition appropriate for your firearm.
  • No tracer, incendiary, or armor‑piercing rounds unless explicitly permitted.
  • Inspect firearms and equipment regularly for safe operation.
  • Report malfunctions that may pose a safety risk.

Emergency Procedures

In the event of an emergency:
  • Call cease fire immediately.
  • Follow RSO instructions without delay.
  • First‑aid kits and emergency contacts are available on‑site.
  • Report all incidents to the club executive as soon as possible.

Range Etiquette

A safe range is also a respectful one.
  • Be courteous to fellow shooters.
  • Share the firing line during busy times.
  • Avoid unnecessary distractions such as loud conversations or sudden movements.
  • Assist new shooters when appropriate and safe to do so.

Prohibited Activities

The following are not permitted under any circumstances:
  • Handling firearms behind the firing line
  • Shooting under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Horseplay or unsafe behavior
  • Unauthorized targets or explosive materials
  • Shooting outside designated areas
  • Ignoring RSO instructions

Consequences for Unsafe Behavior

To protect all members:
  • Unsafe behavior may result in immediate removal from the range.
  • Repeated or serious violations may lead to suspension or termination of membership.
  • Guest behavior is the responsibility of the sponsoring member.

Acknowledgment of Range Standing Orders

All members must acknowledge and agree to follow the clubs Range Safety Orders as part of their membership. Guests must be briefed before shooting.
